CVE SHOULD BE MAINSTREAMED IN SCHOOL CURRICULA

Civic and Voter Education (CVE) is important not only for potential voters but also to school-going individuals who are future voters because they must be included in the electoral process. This was said by Malawi Electoral Support Network (MESN) Chairman Steve Duwa during a meeting with a delegation from Lesotho Independent Electoral Commission on Wednesday, 8 April.

The meeting which was held at Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) convened to discuss and compare civic and voter education process of Malawi and Lesotho.

Duwa further said the National Taskforce on Electoral Reforms, which is co-chaired for MESN, has included CVE as one of the thematic areas that needs to be reformed.

As MESN, we want CVE to be an important and ongoing process in the electoral system. Students and pupils should also be in the know of what goes on before and during the electoral process,” said Duwa.

One of the delegates from Lesotho Lydia Liqabang Macheli said that she was grateful for the information that MESN had shared because their country is trying to adopt a new electoral system.

“Our elections are not continuous and the CVE is usually election-motivated. We are however planning to adopt a system that is long term and provides CVE even after the elections,” said Macheli.
